Today the wonderful Jen from the Nerdy Bookworm Box is stopping by the blog for an interview! Click to read more about the box as well as Jen herself!
For those who haven't heard, I've had the wonderful oppurtunity of getting to talk to and work with Jen, the owner of the book box subscription, the Nerdy Bookworm Box. For the past four months, I've gotten to see how how Jen and her business has skyrocketed and I couldn't be happier for her! Today, she's stopping by the blog for an interview, which I am super excited about and I hope you are too! Below in the interview, I asked her questions about the book box that I thought would interest you, as well as some questions about Jen herself!
Before we get into the interview, here's a little information about the box! The Nerdy Bookworm Box is a monthly subscription service that focuses on fantasy and science fiction novels. Each month Jen curates a box based on a certain theme such as Book Boyfriends, Dystopian, and one of my favorites, Dark Magic. The box will contain a newly released YA or Adult novel along with 3-5 bookish goodies that relate to the theme and book. Bookish goodies includes: super cute pins, signed bookplates, posters, candles, (my fave!) and other amazing book goodies. The box always sells out fast and every time we get the notification that the box has shipped, it's basically Christmas for us bookworms!
Now time for the interview!
S&D: How did you come up with the name The Nerdy Bookworm Box? Did you have any others in mind?
Jen: First, thanks so much for having me! I came up with the name for the box by thinking about who I wanted the box to be for. And the answer was simple. Bookworms who are also a bit nerdy! I checked to make sure no other book boxes were using it yet, and the box was born shortly after that!
S&D: How do you go about the process when choosing a book and a theme for the Nerdy Bookworm Box? Theme first or the book?
Jen: The book comes first most definitely. I’ve been keeping a spreadsheet of new and upcoming books on my computer, and I like to read each title before making the final pick each month. I do have a list of themes I’d like to use at some point if the opportunity presents itself, but the choice of the book always come first. It’s important to me to send out books I truly think are special and that subscribers will love.
S&D: What are some of the best things/moments about opening up the Nerdy Bookworm Box? Have you faced any tough challenges?
Jen: One of the best moments was that week when subscribers began to receive the first box. I had no idea how it was going to go over, and it really was the moment of truth. So, when the feedback was great, it was a wonderful feeling. There are tough challenges in running a subscription box, but I’ve loved every minute of it. You have to be organised, and there’s a lot of balls to juggle. Since I work with small business who handcraft their products, it’s crucial to plan ahead.
S&D: Do you happen to have a favorite box that you’ve curated recently or will be currating?
Jen: Of the ones I’ve sent out so far, I have to say the Book Boyfriend box has been my most favourite to curate! As soon as I had the idea, I knew exactly which items I wanted to include. There are quite a few things in there that smell nice, so it was a lot of fun picking out the various scents to match each book boyfriend! As for upcoming themes, I’m pretty excited about the September box, but I won’t share anything more than that. ;-)
S&D: Do you have any upcoming plans for the Nerdy Bookworm Box that you can share?
Jen: I just added a new mini-magazine to the box called Owl Hoots. It includes exclusive content, such as interviews with the authors, as well as some interactive features, such as quizzes and book club questions. Over the next couple of months, I plan to make the mini-magazine even bigger and better. There’s also a few more plans in the works, but we’re not quite ready to announce those just yet!
Now it’s time to get to know a little bit more about the owner of the Nerdy Bookworm Box, Jen!
S&D: Have you always been a bookworm?
Jen: This is a cliche answer, but I have honestly been a bookworm for as long as I can remember. I’ve always had a bookshelf stuffed with books, and I remember begging my parents to take me to the bookstore when I had only just learned to read.
S&D: Do you have a favorite author(s)?
Jen: J.K. Rowling is by far my favourite author, but I am also a huge fan of Maggie Stiefvater, George R. R. Martin, Scott Westerfeld, and David Levithan.
S&D: E-books or physicals? Hardbacks or paperbacks?
Jen: All of the above! Really, I love them all. I do prefer physical books over e-books, but I have my Kindle, and I use it often. I probably prefer paperbacks when I’m reading, but the spines of hardcovers look nicer on my shelf. :-)
S&D: What are some of your favorite genres?
Jen: I love all YA from contemporary to historical to dystopian to epic fantasy, and I’m a huge fan of fantasy and science fiction in general.
S&D: If you could dine with any author, living or dead, who would it be and why?
Jen: J.K. Rowling, because I would want to tell her how much her stories have meant to me. I started reading YA because of Harry Potter, I started working in publishing because of Harry Potter, and I wrote both my Masters dissertation and my PhD thesis partly about Harry Potter. As cheesy as it sounds, I can trace back so many choices in my life to my love for those books. It is true that books can make a huge impact on someone’s life, and this series has especially for me. And while I’m sure she hears it all the time, I would love to be able to tell her how much her writing has made me into the person I am today.

So, there you have it! I really do hope you enjoyed the interview as much as I enjoyed partnering up with Jen for it! Out of all of the book box subscriptions there are, the Nerdy Bookworm Box is one of my favorites. From the cute little design, to the contents, Jen works hard at what she does and you can definitely see the effort she puts into every box. I actually received the July box today and the theme of it was Dark Magic and I was absolutely IN LOVE with all of the contents! From a signed book plate, to one of my most anticipated reads to a cute little candle, everything inside was perfect and my little bookworm heart exploded with happiness! Definitely be on the lookout on my Instagram page (@SassyNDangerous) for more pictures of the box and the goodies! I am honored to have been a rep for her and I am so excited to see what else Jen will come up with for the box! If you haven't already subscribed, I highly suggest you do!
