Sassy's Blogiversary Bash Day One - Jenny Martin + MEGA INT GIVEAWAY!

Happy Friday!

It's my blogiversary today! And it's Friday! Could there be any better day to celebrate a blogiversary on? I don't think so! This past year has been such an amazing experience in the book community and I knew I needed to make this event a crazy, fun one, just for you guys. I know a lot of us (including me!) didn't get to go to BEA this year, so I'm bringing it to YOU!

Over the next 13 days, I will be interviewing AMAZING YA/NA authors and I am so exited to have them on my blog. Today I will be featuring YA author, Jenny Martin. Don't forget to enter the huge giveaway at the bottom and show some love for Jenny! :)

The Fast and the Furious gets a futuristic twist in this action-packed debut!

On corporately controlled Castra, rally racing is a high-stakes game that seventeen-year-old Phoebe Van Zant knows all too well. Phee’s legendary racer father disappeared mysteriously, but that hasn't stopped her from speeding headlong into trouble. When she and her best friend, Bear, attract the attention of Charles Benroyal, they are blackmailed into racing for Benroyal Corp, a company that represents everything Phee detests. Worse, Phee risks losing Bear as she falls for Cash, her charming new teammate. But when she discovers that Benroyal is controlling more than a corporation, Phee realizes she has a much bigger role in Castra’s future than she could ever have imagined. It's up to Phee to take Benroyal down. But even with the help of her team, can a street-rat destroy an empire?

Hi Jenny! I am so happy to have you stop by the blog today! Before we get the interview started, would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself?

Sure! By day, I’m a school librarian in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area. By night, I’m an author. It’s no secret that I’m a binge reader (and binge watcher!) of all things science fiction, fantasy and true magical realism. Give me a larger than life story, and I’m hooked. Also, did I mention I like pancakes?

1. What gave you the idea to write Tracked? Was it a long time idea or did it just come to you randomly?

In one way, the idea for Tracked had been sleeping in my subconscious for years. I’m a lifelong Star Wars fan, and I love space opera so much. But the immediate inspirations for Tracked came after watching Death Race 2000 with Jason Statham and Hot Coffee, a documentary about corporations and the slow erosion of civil rights.  Once I had the basic idea, my main character—Phee—was born. I’m really glad she came along, and popped into my head. Writing her was good for my spirit. Writing Tracked helped me conquer my own fears and timidity.

2. What was the most difficult part in writing it?

I think the most difficult part was balancing the intrigue and action. I understood Phee’s voice, and the heart of the characters. And the action scenes were so fun to write—those unfolded very naturally, and I always love writing them. In writing Tracked, I’d say it was much harder to juggle all the other pieces of the puzzle—subplots, theme, and all the surprise twists that came with it!

3. Are there any parts in the book that you feel particularly close to? If so, what would it be?

While I love the action scenes, I’m a sucker for emotional turning points. There’s a scene in chapter twenty-seven that still really gets to me. I still get choked up every time I read it. I love these two characters, and their complicated relationship. My heart breaks for them.

4. During the cover design process (I bet that’s always the fun part!) where you able to voice what you wanted/pictured?

I was given the opportunity to share ideas and give feedback, but ultimately, cover decisions were in my publisher’s hands. But I will say that I love the racing logo so much. I think the lion crest is especially fierce and iconic. Love it!

5. Do you have any upcoming projects? If so, can you let us in on a sneak peak?

I’m currently finished up edits for Tracked’s sequel, and I can’t wait for readers to see what happens next! Phee has been through much, but she’s still got a long road ahead of her. There are many battles to face, and every happy ending comes at a cost, so get ready! I’m also beginning a brand new project, a dark, swoony horror slash love story. In it, there’s magic. Ghosts. Ashes. Dickens. Truck stops, con artists and demon dogs. I hope to share it with readers someday!

What a fun interview! Thank you once again for stopping by Jenny and congratulations on your amazing book!

Thanks SO much for having me!

Jenny Martin is an author, librarian, and Beatle-maniac. Her first novel, Tracked, is available now, from Dial, an imprint of Penguin Random-House.

She lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, with her husband and son, where she hoards books and writes fiction, and hangs out with people who like those things, too.

And yes, she’s still on a quest for the perfect pancake. (Maybe you can recommend the perfect short stack?)
