Following a violent episode with her aunt's boyfriend, Ember flees Ohio to live with an old relative in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Ember's exuberance at escaping a bad home life soon turns to trepidation when she learns that she's a Watcher, a descendant of angels.
While Ember is instructed about her heritage and the powers that go along with it, she strikes up friendships with two teenagers who live in a frightening walled compound in the forest. In explicitly drawn to one of the young men in particular, an impossible romance develops.
But it's cut short when Ember discovers that her new friends are fighting on the opposite side of a war that's been raging between two factions of Watchers for thousands of years.
When the compound’s inhabitants threaten the townspeople, Ember takes action, sealing her fate in the ancient battle of good versus evil, and the grayness in between. Ember is up to the challenge, until she realizes that she isn't only fighting for the lives of the locals and the souls of her new friends. She may be one of the few champions willing to make a stand for all of mankind as the rapture approaches and the end of days begin.
Embers is the first novel in the dark and gritty YA paranormal romance series, The Wings of War.
Hi Karen! Thank you so much for being here today! Not too long ago, I came across your book Embers, and I absolutely fell in in love with the cover and the plot!
1.Tell us, where did you get your idea for Embers? Did it just come to you or was it planned out for a while?
Hello, Talina! I've been writing Amish themed fiction for the past few years. I was inspired to write in that genre by the Amish community that I lived in. I was able to draw on personal experiences, observations and interactions with the Amish to write the Harlequin Teen YA Temptation series (Temptation, Belonging & Forever) and the Indie Amish mystery series,
Serenity’s Plain Secrets (Lamb to the Slaughter & Whispers From the Dead). I guess you can say that after writing in the Amish world for a while, I was ready to branch out to something more fantastical. The idea of a girl who was descended from angels falling in love with a boy who was a demon had been on my mind for a long time. When I finished the Temptation series, I couldn’t resist the urge to tackle the apocalypse and write paranormal/adventure romance.
2.What is your writing day like? Inside with a cup of delicious coffee, or outside in the warm sun?
My first priorities when I wake up each day are getting my kids started on their home-schooling (I have five children and four are still at home) and doing the farm chores. During the wintertime, the schooling and farm work take a lot longer, so I’m lucky to get on the computer at around noon.
I’ll spend about an hour and a half with social media, promotions, my website and record keeping before I finally get to dive into one of my manuscripts. I usually write for a few hours, break for dinner and the kids’ after school activities and then put in a couple more hours of writing in the evening. I love writing in the summertime when I have more free time and nowadays, I try to plan my first drafts between May and August and leave editing and revising for the winter months.
3.If you could visit any fictional place, where would you go?
Definitely Middle Earth! Of course, I’d love to meet all my favorite Tolkien characters and visit Hobbiton, Rohan and Rivendell, but I especially want to see one of the Meara horses, preferably Shadowfax, the King of the Mearas.
4. Do you have any upcoming projects you’d like your readers to know?
Currently, I’m working on the sequel to Embers, which is titled GAIA, and the third book in Serenity’s Plain Secrets.
Thanks again for stopping by Karen! It was a pleasure having you!
Thank you so much for having me! If anyone has further questions about Embers or my Amish fiction, they can contact me at my website: www.karenannhopkins.com or they can reach me on FB, Twitter and Goodreads! I love to hear from readers!
Karen Ann Hopkins resides in northern Kentucky with her family on a farm that boasts a menagerie of horses, goats, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, dogs and cats. Karen's main job is home schooling the kids, but she finds time to give riding lessons, coach a youth equestrian drill team, and of course, write.
She was inspired to create her first book, Temptation, by the Amish community she lived in. The experiential knowledge she gained through her interactions with her neighbors drove her to create the story of the star-crossed lovers, Rose and Noah. Karen grew up about a mile from Lake Ontario in Upstate New York.
She was bitten by the horse bug at the age of five, and after diligently taking riding lessons for several years, was rewarded with her first horse at the age of eleven. The feisty horse's name was Lady, a Quarter Horse-Thoroughbred cross, who became Karen's steadfast companion. Through the years, the constant force in her life was horses.
Eventually, she found her place as a riding instructor herself. Before accepting her fate in the barnyard, she worked a short stint as a paralegal, traveled abroad, and guided tourists on horseback riding tours in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Karen is currently working on her Amish mystery series, Serenity's Plain Secrets, along with the YA paranormal/fantasy series, The Wings of War. Karen is also excited to announce the Temptation series has been optioned for TV by Pilgrim Studios
