First zit. First crush. First…mermaid’s tail?

If she hadn’t been so clueless, she might have seen it coming. But really, who expects to get into a relaxing bathtub after a stressful day of shopping for tankinis and come out with scales and a tail?

Most. Embarassing. Moment. Ever.

Jade soon discovers she inherited her mermaid tendencies from her mom. But this revelation raises a serious question: if Mom was a mermaid, how did she drown?

Jade is determined to find out. But how does a plus-sized, aqua-phobic, mer-girl go about doing that, exactly? And how will Jade ever be able to explain her secret to her best friend Cori, and her crush, Luke?

This summer is about to get a lot more interesting…

Hi  Hélène! Thank you so much for being here today! I have read three books in your Real Mermaid series and I absolutely loved them! I just recently found out you had a fourth book out and I am dying to get my hands on it!

1. Tell us, what gave you the inspiration to write Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings?

My main character, Jade, came about through conversations I had with my daughters about phobias. We were getting a bit silly, talking about birds that were afraid of flying or fish that were afraid of swimming; which led to the idea of an aqua-phobic mer-girl. It just seemed like such a ridiculous idea that I had to see where it led. Little did I know; it would lead to this book series!

The setting of the story is actually based on the town of St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia, Canada near where I grew up. My dad used to take us there by boat and we’d sail from the ocean, up a canal and through a boat lock to the Bras D’Or Lake. I was always amazed by the purple jelly fish in the ocean compared to the white jelly fish in the fresh water lake. It always made me wonder how different it would be to live in a lake compared to the ocean. That was the inspiration for my underwater mer-world in the Real Mermaids series.

2. What was the hardest part in writing your Real Mermaid series?

When writing a series, in this case four books, it’s extremely challenging to keep character voices consistent while keeping the momentum and excitement for the story going from one book to the next. It helps to keep copious notes, detailed outlines, and of course; a great team of editors to be your ‘second sight’.

3. Are you a Superhero fan? If so, who is your absolute favorite?

I like reluctant heroes, characters that are still coming to terms with their powers, plus I am a HUGE fan of geeks, so I think The Incredible Hulk and his alter-ego Dr. Banner have to be one of my favorites. HULK SMASH!

4. Do you have any upcoming projects you'd like your readers to know about?

I am actually working on something brand new that I am extremely excited about. It is based on a little known type of cultural mythology, of which I am a big fan. Stay tuned!

Thank you once again for stopping by Hélène!

  1. This sounds like an interesting book! I have never heard of this author before, and haven't been reading many mermaid reads for a few years actually! I loved them as a child so I should really start picking more of them up...

  2. Olivia, you are missing out on so many great books! I actually picked up another mermaid book a few weeks back called The Tale of Emily Windsnap. It sounds like a promising book, so, I'm excited to get into it. You should check out Hélène's book and the Emily Windsnap one. :)
