Donna Pierce might hear voices, but that doesn’t mean she’s crazy. Probably.

The voices do serve their purpose, though—whenever Donna hears them, she knows she’s in danger. So when they start yelling at the top of their proverbial lungs, it’s no surprise she and her best friend, Deke, end up narrowly escaping a zombie horde. Alone without their families, they take refuge at their high school with the super-helpful nerds, the bossy head cheerleader, and—best of all?—Liam, hottie extraordinaire and Donna’s long-time crush. When Liam is around, it’s easy to forget about the moaning zombies, her dad’s plight to reach them, and how weird Deke is suddenly acting toward her.

But as the teens’ numbers dwindle and their escape plans fall apart, Donna has to listen to the secrets those voices in her head have been hiding. It seems not all the zombies are shuffling idiots, and the half-undead aren’t really down with kids like Donna…

1. I, myself am a huge Walking Dead fan. Throw me a book with romance and zombies and you’ve made my day! Tell us, what exactly made you want to write about a zombie apocalypse?

Yes! The Walking Dead is such a great series! I actually wrote my first zombie book before Walking Dead started, but I was already a huge fan of zombie movies. Zombieland, Shaun of the Dead, Warm Bodies and 28 Days Later are a few of my favorites. They definitely spurred me to try my own zombie story.

2. What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?

I hike and travel a lot. I’m headed to Iceland in a few months!

3. How did you feel when your first book got published? Anxious, excited, worried?

I was excited when my first book, Donna of the Dead, released in March, but I was CRAZY-EXCITED when the companion, Dead Over Heels, came out in September.

It was Halloween season, and I was asked to do so many fun zombie/Halloween posts and online events. I had a blast! I just found out that I’ll have a Halloween release for the third book in this series, so I’m overjoyed about that!

4. What would you do if a zombie apocalypse was among us?

My friends joke that I would barricade myself in a Starbucks. I couldn’t survive a zombie apocalypse without coffee. :)

Alison Kemper is the author of DEAD OVER HEELS and DONNA OF THE DEAD; both books spent several months on the Kindle teen humor bestseller lists.

Her third book with Entangled Teen will be released in 2015. She lives in a small town in North Carolina where she hikes and eats obscene amounts of barbeque.

  1. No wonder you said you wanted to sleep closer to the coffee pot in Nashville for UtopYA in June, Alison! Now I get it--it's zombie apocalypse fuel. ;)

(Disqualifying myself from the giveaway, btw)

  2. I haven't read too many books that do zombies very well - only one if I am honest! So maybe this will be another to prove me wrong about zombie books being bad and make me like them! I think the idea of voices talking to you when you are in danger is also pretty handy. I wouldn't mind having that ;)
