A mermaid’s supernatural beauty serves one purpose: to lure a sailor to his death.
The Massacre is supposed to bring peace to Eriana Kwai. Every year, the island sends its warriors to battle these hostile sea demons. Every year, the warriors fail to return. Desperate for survival, the island must decide on a new strategy. Now, the fate of Eriana Kwai lies in the hands of twenty battle-trained girls and their resistance to a mermaid’s allure.
Eighteen-year-old Meela has already lost her brother to the Massacre, and she has lived with a secret that’s haunted her since childhood. For any hope of survival, she must overcome the demons of her past and become a ruthless mermaid killer.
For the first time, Eriana Kwai’s Massacre warriors are female, and Meela must fight for her people’s freedom on the Pacific Ocean’s deadliest battleground.
#1. Do you remember the very first book you read on your own? What was it?
I think it was Dr. Seuss. One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. Incidentally, I also got my first paper cut on that book.
#2. What is the hardest thing about writing?
Finding time to do it. Life is very busy. My word of advice: if you want to be a writer you need to make it your priority. For me, I force myself to get up extra early and write before work every day.
#3. What made you want to write about mermaids?
I wanted to write a story about supernatural creatures, but I wanted it to be something different. I haven’t seen much out there that portrays mermaids for what they really are: dangerous sea demons.
Also, I think I was destined to write about flesh-eating mermaids. When I was little, I used to paint Disney colouring books entirely in black. Top to bottom, just black. I mean to say: maybe I’ve always had the knack for turning something beautiful into something dark.
#4. What is your favorite thing about the holidays?
The feeling of it. That warm, cozy, magical, spending-time-with-family-and-drinking-hot-chocolate-by-the-fire-with-the-soft-glow-of-Christmas-lights-outside-your-window feeling.
#5. If you could live in any fictional universe, which would it be?
OMG. Hogwarts. Definitely.
#6. Do you have any upcoming projects you'd like your readers to know about?
I’m hard at work on the sequel to Ice Massacre!
Makes 2 dozen. They're so easy. The trick is to just keep beating until the batter is so light and fluffy you want to use it as a pillow.
- 1 cup butter
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1.5 cups flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch
- Glazed cherries, cut into quarters
1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
2. Cream butter and sugar. Beat until light and fluffy.
3. Add flour and cornstarch gradually while beating continuously. Beat some more.
4. Drop teaspoon-sized cookies onto a greased cookie sheet.
5. Bake 12-14 mins.
6. Press glazed cherries on the cookies as soon as they come out of the oven.
