Meet 14-year-old Sean Malone. He has an IQ above 200, a full-ride scholarship to one of the country’s top universities, and more than one million dollars from his winning streak on Jeopardy. However, Sean wishes he could just be normal.

But his life is anything but normal. The US government manipulates him, using him as a codebreaker in pursuit of a drug lord and killing innocent people along the way.

For reasons related to his personal security, Sean finds himself in Rome, building a new life under a new name, abandoning academics, and hiding his genius from everyone. When he’s 18 he falls in love. The thrills begin again when he learns that his girlfriend is critically ill and it’s up to him to use his intellect to find a cure, a battle pitting him against a multi-billion-dollar pharmaceutical company and the demons of his past.

Elixir is a story about identity, secrets, and above all, love.

#1.Who was your favorite character to write about in Elixir?

Of course I enjoyed writing about Sean, the main character, who’s involved in almost every scene.  I really liked writing the interactions between him and his girlfriend, Natasha.  It was important to me that readers developed a tender spot for Sean and Natasha prior to her getting Ebola.  When she winds up getting sick, that tender spot keeps readers invested in the outcome of the story; since they’re rooting for Sean and Natasha’s relationship, they’re of course rooting for him to save her from the disease, which is the central conflict in the book.

#2.Where did you come up with your idea for it?

There was no “aha!” moment with the idea.  The story built in my head over a period of about six months.  At first I just had the premise of a teenage genius who gets involved in high-stakes predicaments because of his intelligence.  Things started coming together when I worked in the romantic element.  But of course the main story took form when I had the idea to have the protagonist’s girlfriend fall ill with a deadly disease, which he shoulders the responsibility to cure.  That disease of course is Ebola.
Oddly enough, when I started writing Elixir back in 2013, there was no real-life Ebola outbreak and the disease wasn’t in the news like it is today.  Based on how fast it acts and how hard it is to treat, it was a fit for my fictional suspense story.  At this point though, I hope that the book can help educate people about Ebola, and continue advancing public opinion toward a push for a real-world cure.

#3.If you could list three things that you’d want to change about your book, what would they be?

I had many more than three things I wanted to change about my book, but I fixed them all before I released it : )

#4.What is favorite thing about the holidays?

I live in California and most of my family lives in New Jersey.  Every Thanksgiving and Christmas I visit them on the East coast; the best thing is seeing my whole family in one place, something I never get to experience any other days of the year.  Also presents.

#5. Do you have a favorite superhero/villain?

My favorite superhero was Batman growing up, particularly the one played by Michael Keaton in the Tim Burton movies.  There’s been a bunch of takes on the Batman franchise since, in multiple formats, but I still like those Tim Burton movies the best.

#6.Do you have any upcoming projects you want to let your readers know about?

I’m currently writing my second book, but am not speaking about the story yet.  To get alerted about it before anyone else, you can sign up for my email list at
